Overview
In April 2001, Vic James was impressed by newspaper photographs of the wonderful sets Peter Jackson was creating for his ‘Lord of the Rings’ film trilogy. Then it struck him... why not organize a tour to take fans to visit these fantastic locations? He needed help from a long term fan and was lucky enough to make contact with Erica Challis-Tehanu of the fan website TheOneRing.net (a founding member). The website was receiving a deluge of emails from fans all over the world wanting to come to ‘Middle Earth’.
Vic’s initial task was to make contact with the landowners who had sets built on their properties. The first one he contacted was the farmer who had the set of Hobbiton on his land. The phone call came just in time, as the bulldozer was scheduled to destroy the remaining 17 Hobbit holes the following day! Since that momentous occasion more than 190,000 fans have visited the site. It must have been a good idea!
So far people from 20 different countries have taken Red Carpet’s 12-day tour, many of whom have done so twice and some three times. They come to New Zealand with a strong desire to visit Middle Earth and leave reluctantly having fallen in love with the country and its people.
The tour begins the moment fans set foot on New Zealand soil. A Red Carpet representative meets them at the airport and transfers them to their hotel. A welcome dinner that night allows tour members to meet each other and realize that they are in the midst of friends who share a common theme - ‘The Fellowship of The Ring’.
Red Carpet’s expert guides lead their groups through beautiful, pristine scenery that is instantly recognizable as an integral part of the films. New Zealand is often described as ‘Best supporting country’. When you consider that there is also the opportunity to meet people who had significant input into the films, a new dimension is added that fans must not miss.
To quote Gandalf: “All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you”.

Reservation Policy
All prices referred to on this website are in New Zealand dollars and include 12.5% GST (Goods & Services Tax). A non-refundable deposit of NZ$250 per person is required when confirming a booking. Full payment is due 30 days prior to the commencement of the tour.
Cancellation Policy
If after full payment has been made, you wish to cancel your booking, the following cancellation fees will apply. You will receive reimbursement of your tour cost, less: - The cost of hotels, extra transport and flight charges if these have been pre-paid by Red Carpet Tours and are not refundable from the suppliers.
- A NZ$250 non-refundable processing charge applies. (Please note: Payments may be transferred to another tour date without penalty.)
